My husband and I first started our journey to build our dream home in May 2015, when meeting our builder Glen for the first time after seeing a plot advertised on prime location. Glen put us both at ease from our very first interaction and reassured us that our dream would soon become reality. From setting the foundations, to the house layout we had total input at every stage of the build and kept in regular contact throughout the process without the need to be on site. We had total trust and faith in Glen that our home was in safe hands.

He introduced us to his team of crafts people from kitchen and bathroom designers to plumbers and gardeners, which made the whole transition being first time builders a positive and creative one. Our home is very contemporary and exudes individuality and even though we have seen many other of his collection of homes, they are very different which I feel reflects his understanding of the client’s needs.

We are so overwhelmed and proud of the finished product that we call ‘our home’ and have built very good friendships with Glen and his wife Urszula throughout our journey. I would highly recommend AKG homes to anyone wishing to pursue building their dream property/home as it will be a positive and self fulfilling process

For most people, buying a house is the biggest purchase they will make and always necessitates a great deal of thought and planning. Buying an existing house can be difficult enough, but we bought ours ‘off the plan’, with only the architect’s drawings, the computer mock-ups and a piece of field from which to envisage a new home. Neither of us responds well to pushy salesman so it was refreshing to meet Glenn Douthwaite for the first time and sit in his pick-up talking about what the house would be like. Glenn’s approach was to let us see his own house and others built by AKG Homes in the neighbourhood so that the houses could speak for themselves about the style and quality of the build.

One of the most important things for us was that the house would sit comfortably in the landscape – in other words, that it would look ‘right’. This depends most obviously on the external materials – in our case, stone and timber cladding under a slate roof – but also more subtle aspects, such as the pitch of the roof and the size and arrangement of the windows. We liked what we saw in the architect’s drawings and were impressed by other houses designed by Paul O’Shea, both for their design and for their energy efficiency. It was also clear that AKG Homes pride themselves on building to a very high standard and that they have a good reputation for this. As just one example of this, the Siberian larch cladding is fixed with stainless steel nails, each one hammered by hand so that the head does not dent the wood and lead to subsequent discolouration.

We therefore felt confident that with a good design and an expert builder we would be pleased with the finished house, and so it has proved to be. We’re very happy with the house and its location.
